Gooseberry/Nellikka -15 Nos
Kanthari - a handful
Kerala garlic-15 pods
Kerala Ginger- two large pieces
Uluvappodi/Fenugreek powder- 1 teaspoon
Kayappodi/Asafoetida powder-1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds-half teaspoon
Curry leaves-2 sprigs
Salt- as required
Nallenna-as required


Nellikka Vellayittathu/Vella Nellikka/Kerala Style Nellikka Achar is a mouth watering pickle in Kerala. This is an excellent combination with hot rice,kanji rice porridge etc.My mother makes this pickle in different ways,here I share a simple recipe of the same.I used kanthari/bird’s eye chilly in this recipe though you could substitute with green chilly.Do try this delicious traditional pickle and please your taste buds


Wash the gooseberries and make small slits on them.

Sprinkle a little salt and keep aside.

Chop the ginger, garlic and keep aside.

Use the bird’s eye chilly as it is.

Heat oil in a pan on a low-medium flame.

Add mustard seeds and wait till it splutters.

Add curry leaves and saute for few seconds.

Add chopped ginger, garlic and green chillies.Saute for few seconds.

Add kayam and uluva powder to this.

Switch off the flame now.Add warm water to this and combine well.

Add gooseberries to this and mix well.

Transfer this into a jar and keep aside.

Nellikka Vellayittathu is ready.



Water level should be above the gooseberries.

Use this pickle only after few days to set the flavours of ginger, garlic and salt in the gooseberries.

You could keep this pickle outside if you have a favourable climate.
